On the centenary of John Coltrane's birth, fellow tenor saxophonist Azar Lawrence is paying tribute to him, accompanied by three of the best musicians on the US West Coast scene. Lawrence, very close, professionally, to McCoy Tyner, Coltrane's pianist during the Impulse era, has chosen to honour the Jazz giant from the perspective he knows best: the years when ?Trane? laid the foundations for the revolution that so shook up the world of Jazz with his daring, avant-garde approach.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Azar began studying piano at the age of five and saxophone at the age of 10. At 17, his prodigious talent earned him a place in drummer Elvin Jones' ensemble, where he absorbed the rhythmic and harmonic freedom that defined the post-Coltrane revolution.By the age of 21, he had already worked with Ike & Tina Turner, Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, and War. Shortly thereafter, McCoy Tyner, Coltrane's legendary pianist, invited Azar to join his group, leading to a collaboration that spawned three landmark albums and world tours that cemented Azar?s place among the most prominent voices of his generation. He was also briefly part of Miles Davis' band, recording the iconic live album, Dark Magus (1974). During those years, he worked with stars such as Roberta Flack and Marvin Gaye.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Azar became an artist held in very high regard by many of the most innovative figures in Jazz: Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Maurice White, Jaco Pastorius... Those collaborations shaped a distinctive sound, the fusion of spiritual intensity with lyricism and groove.

From his early recordings with Tyner and Jones to his current projects as leader or collaborator, Azar Lawrence has always stood tall as a bridge between generations, between the sacred and the modern. A musician who has maintained, throughout his career, a musical philosophy centred on the search for knowledge and truth. He continues to represent, with his expansive, spiritual sound, the purest connection between the Coltrane tradition and the new dimensions of contemporary Jazz.

Compositrice, chanteuse et artiste visuelle, Cécile McLorin Salvant s'est imposée comme l'une des voix les plus singulières et visionnaires du Jazz contemporain. Son art naît d'une profonde passion pour la narration et l'exploration des connexions entre le Jazz, le vaudeville, le blues, les traditions populaires, le théâtre et la musique baroque. Avec une technique impeccable, une imagination débordante, une musicalité lumineuse et un répertoire vaste et varié, l'artiste américaine est capable de nous transporter dans de magnifiques paysages sonores où coexistent en toute liberté, l'émotion et la théâtralité.

Lauréate du concours Thelonious Monk en 2010, Salvant a remporté trois Grammy Awards dans la catégorie Meilleur album vocal de Jazz pour The Window (2018), Dreams and Daggers (2017) et For One To Love (2015). En 2020, elle a reçu la bourse MacArthur et le Doris Duke Artist Award, des distinctions qui soulignent sa créativité et son influence sur la scène musicale internationale.

Ses albums Ghost Song (2022) et Mélusine (2023) reflètent son esprit éclectique et sa capacité à réinventer la tradition avec un regard contemporain. Interprété principalement en français, mais aussi en occitan, en anglais et en créole haïtien, Mélusine est un album qui transcende les genres et les langues, et qui confirme Salvant comme une artiste sans frontières.

Artiste complète, Salvant développe également le côté visuel de sa créativité à travers de grands dessins textiles, ainsi que des projets tels que « Ogresse », une fable musicale qui mélange folk, Jazz, baroque et country, et qui est actuellement en cours d'adaptation cinématographique.

Dans son dernier album, Oh Snap (2025), McLorin Salvant explore de nouveaux territoires sonores, combinant Jazz, folk, pop et électronique avec sa voix si caractéristique. Chaque morceau révèle, une fois de plus, son talent pour se réinventer et son courage artistique.
