Entry to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid
Entry to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid Enjoy the works of art that you will find at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid the temporary exposition has so much to offer and dont forget to check out the infamous Permanent Exposition. The Thyssen-Bornemisza forms part of Madrids Art Triangle, together with the Prado Museum and the Queen Sofía Museum. From El Greco to Rothko, the museum contains a wide range of famous artists acquired throughout the years. With huge thanks to the Hungarian-German baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza of Kászon, and his passion for the arts this collection was the second largest private collection in the world, after the Royal British collection. The Thyssen-Bornemisza museum has been home to many big artists throughout the years. Other than offering perspectives about individual artists, the Thyssen provides an overview of hundreds of years of successful art; to have all of these masterpieces and pieces of history under one roof is something that you will not experience anywhere else. The museum was designed by the prestigious Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, who also worked on the expansion of the nearby Prado Museum, with the help of the Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemiszas 5th wife, Carmen Cervera. She was a key reason for why her husband moved the majority of his collection to the Spanish capital. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum officially opened in 1992. The best way to see the museum is to start on the top floor and work your way down. By doing so, you will be travelling through history, from Medieval Art on the second floor, passing through the Impressionist, Postimpressionist and the Expressionist on the first floor, and finally arriving to Pop Art and Avant-garde on the ground floor. In total, there are more than 1600 works of art in the collection, many of whom are famous artists. Holbein El Joven, El Greco, Tintoretto y Titan, Caravaggio and José de Ribera are amongst some of the most well-known on the top floor of the museum, with Gainsborough, Goya, Van Gogh, Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas Edvard Munch and Matisse following on the first floor. On the ground floor you will find artists such as Picasso, Kandinsky, Dalí, Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein and Henry Moore. The outside expansion has now made space for a cafeteria and a restaurant. Also there is a shop with books, museum guides and post cards. In the months of summer, the restaurant El Mirador opens its terrace on the top floor. The Thyssen-Bornemisza receives around a million visitors a year. It can get very busy we suggest that you arrive with ticket in hand! Additional information: Wheelchair friendly The open hours are as follows: Tuesday Sunday 10:00 18:30.
