A classic Spanish horror film, based on a story by the Swiss writer Friedrich Dürrenmatt, who also worked on the screenplay, and a few months later published the novel entitled The Pledge (with a different ending). A girl is found murdered in the woodland of a small Swiss village. Suspicion immediately falls on the old peddler who found the body. Only police inspector Matthäi doubts his guilt, but he has just retired, and leaves the case in the hands of a colleague. Matthäi is already at the airport, his plane about to take off, when he recalls certain details given by the children at the school, prompting him to put off his trip and investigate the case.
